Everyone knows that you need to protect your skin in the summer, but what about your hair? From heat and sunlight to trips to the pool, summer is the most damaging season for your hair. This is especially true if you are suffering from hair loss and thinning hair. How can you fight off damage and keep your hair looking summer chic? Check out these tips for help!
1. Wear Your Hair Loose
Tight ponytails and braids can contribute to damage and hair loss. When you take a dip in the pool with tied hair, you increase your likelihood of damage tenfold. Summer is for relaxing anyway, so let your hair flow free and keep it down or in loose hairstyles.
2. Beware of Chlorine
Pools are great for summer fun, but chlorine can do a lot of damage to your hair. After treatments like coloring, perms, or chemical straightening, you should wait a week before exposing your hair to chlorine. Wet your hair before getting into the pool, because the wetter it is, the less chemicals it’ll soak up. Make sure to rinse or wash your hair after swimming so the chlorine doesn’t have time to set in. Not only can chlorine turn your hair green, but those chemicals can contribute to hair thinning! Keep your hair thick and shiny by limiting its exposure to chlorine.
3. Cover Up
When possible, try to cover your hair to prevent damage. On a sunny day at the beach, wear a hat! Not only are hats a stylish option to keep the sun out of your eyes, but they’re great for protecting your hair from sun damage! When you go for a swim, use a swim cap when you can. It’ll block your hair from exposure to chlorine and keep lock in your natural oils. Try to stay away from latex caps, though. They’ll pull on your hair and contribute to thinning and damage.
4. Use the Right Products
There are tons of different products to prevent hair damage. When you swim in the pool, put in some leave-in conditioner first. Keeping your hair properly moisturized will limit the damage caused by chlorine. When you’re out in the sun, use products that protect against UV rays. These rays aren’t just bad for your skin, they can dry and damage your hair, making it weaker and more vulnerable to thinning and hair loss.
5. Keep Your Hair Hydrated
Sun can lighten your hair and make it look fabulous, but it also dries out your hair. Make sure you’re properly conditioning your hair, and even going to a stylist for an occasional deep conditioning. Avoid heat-activated products like straighteners and blow-dryers. Opt for a towel dry and embrace your natural look! There’s no better time to let your hair flow free than in the summer!
