Saying Goodbye to Baseball Caps
Larry O’Connor, host of WMAL’s The Larry O’Connor Show decided it was high time to do something about his hair loss. Larry shares his experience with hair loss & what made him finally decide to get rid of his over-abundant collection of baseball caps!
We sat down with Larry and his wife Meredith the other day, and it soon became apparent just how hard coping with hair loss as actually been for them.
Meredith: The subject of hair is something that has come up at our house on a daily basis for a very long time. It’s something we seem to talk about almost daily. And if we’re going out somewhere to someplace where Larry couldn’t wear a hat, he tried to put his hair together in a really delicate way.
Larry: Yeah. You plaster your hair with hairspray and you pray that the wind doesn’t blow.
Meredith: You even plan where you park the car, and all this stuff to make sure that your hair stays where it is and doesn’t get out of place and so that way it looks exactly right and how he wants it to be so he has some level of confidence in his appearance.
Larry: How many times before I had to go somewhere did I say, “Hey, how does my hair look? Is my hair okay?”
Meredith: Oh absolutely. We would check every time before we left the house so that it is exactly right and before we would go into a room, if we were going to a public event, or even into a restaurant.
Larry: Good God, I am a nightmare to live with. I don’t know how Meredith put up with it.
Meredith: It is a confidence thing and no one would think twice about a woman asking her husband how does my hair look? It is the same thing here. It’s a confidence thing and we want to solve it instead of just living this way. We knew that there were solutions out there and so if we are going to be worried about this, and this is going to be a thing, and this is clearly a confidence thing, then let’s just do something. Let’s just call and talk to someone.
Larry: Meredith was really good through all this though, because she gently prodded me. She knew ultimately it had to be my decision. She really did put me in a position to make the choice.
Meredith: And when the time finally came to talk to someone it was great. I was fully supportive of that because I wanted that to happen. I knew that Larry needed to go through his research and he needed to read about it on his own. Because it really sounds really scary if you start looking at the procedures online and you start searching it and everything. But until you actually talk to someone you don’t quite have all of the information you really need.
Larry: That is such a great point. If you’re just going off of what you read on a website and the comment section or some blog post, you don’t have all the answers. What you need to do is pick up the phone, click on the link. It’s not going to take a lot of time out of your life. It is easy to get here. Have the conversation then at least you have all the information.
Meredith: I’m excited, you know. I have a background in the medical field and I have watched many surgeries. So I am actually excited for Larry to have this procedure.
Larry: She really likes to watch me get cut up. It’s amazing. I don’t know what that is about.
Meredith: I am excited that now we can start moving on this part of our life to where it now. We’ve done something and now we get to see the next step. It’s going to take a little while before we see the results of the transplants come in and we see what it really looks like, but now whenever he looks in the mirror and he is like, “Is my hair looking okay?” and the conversation is, “Well, you’re going to have to wait to see what happens.”
Larry: Yea, now I’m saying, “Is my hair growing back yet? Can you see anything back there? How’s it looking back there?” How cool is that going to be every day?
Meredith: So instead of saying you know we can do something about this, now it’s hey we’ve done something. Thinking ahead to when Larry’s hair fully grows back, I’m really excited about the fact that I don’t feel like we will be limited any more in what we want to do. I mean, you know, there are tons of places in the Washington, DC area where you can go eat in the bar or eat in the dining room. In the bar you can wear a ball cap but in the dining room you can’t. I’m very excited about the fact that we will no longer be limited to where we want to go out to eat based on whether or not people are wearing a ball cap that day.
Larry: Right. Well that’s the thing. It’s like maybe during the day I was wearing a hat because we were at a football game, but then okay we can’t go anywhere tonight because I will need, you know, a good hour to get my hair in place after wearing a hat all day but that is not going to be a problem anymore.
Meredith: You know, I so remember one time we went to a bar to go and eat, a bar with a nice restaurant, and the bar was full. We said, “Oh yeah, we will go upstairs and go eat,” and they said, “Oh, I’m sorry sir. You will have to take off your hat.” And the whole time I could tell Larry was only concerned about the fact that he had just taken his hat off.
Larry: It’s not all that I was concerned about. But it was there. It was an issue. It was a problem.
Meredith: It was an issue.
Larry: Because I want to look good for you. I do. I don’t want to be that guy sitting at the table where all the other people at the table are looking at us and saying, “Why is she with him? What is she doing with that old bald guy?” I mean, who wants that?
Meredith: So are we making reservations?
Larry: Valentine’s Day I’m thinking.
