How long should you wait after your transplant before going to the hairdresser?
The first few weeks after your hair transplant you will need to give yourself a little more care. You should follow all the advice from your surgeon after your hair transplant. You will most likely be given special products to use that will help in the healing process and reduce any chance of infection.
Around the two to three-week mark, the scabs from your hair transplant will begin to heal and fall off. When this happens, it is unlikely the newly transplanted hair will be lost with a haircut. However, it is still advised that you wait at least one month. If you have any questions about how you are healing you should talk to your surgeon.
Best hairstyles following a hair transplant
After your hair transplant surgery, it will be around 6 to 9 months before your transplant hair will begin to grow. With this in mind, the best haircut would be one that focuses on working with the hair you currently have.
The one great benefit of FUE hair transplants is that there is no linear scaring so you can choose to shave your head until your transplanted hair begins to grow if you wish. If you have long hair you can continue to grow it out as a way to cover areas that have been transplanted.
As your hair begins to grow feel free to experiment with new haircuts and try hairstyles that you may have not been able to wear before.
Do’s and don’ts after hair transplant
When going to the hairdresser for the first-time post-transplant, follow these few do’s and don’t for a better experience.
Do’s
• Get advice from your hair transplant surgeon if you are not sure if you are ready for a haircut. If you have redness or swelling you may not want to go to a hairdresser.
• Be careful when getting your hair dried. The transplant area may have some numbness and you risk burning your scalp and not know it.
• Look for a hairdresser that has worked with individuals that have had a hair transplant.
Don’ts
• Stay away from styling products if you can. Your scalp may be to sensitive and they could cause some irritation of the scalp.
• Don’t hesitate to ask your hairdresser to be more gentle, to use cooler water or take a break if you have discomfort.
• Don’t worry if you notice your hair thinning after your first haircut. This is a normal part of post-transplant recovery which your surgeon will be able to advise you about.
